So I was reading this blog Mariah Carey-Cannon and I posted my favorite song of hers. And the reason that song is my favorite is because of the lyrics. Those who know me know I love music and really can't function without it, but what I love so much about music is the music where the words just SMACK you in the face.
This is my favorite from Mrs. Cannon
She started the song off powerful
"You called yesterday to basically say
That you care for me,
But that you're just not in love
Immediately I pretended
To be feeling similarly
And led you to believe it was okay
To just walk away from the one thing
That's unyielding and sacred to me"
Then the chorus...
"Well I guess I'm trying to be
Nonchalant about it
And I'm going to extremes to prove
I'm fine without you
But in reality I'm slowly losing my mind
Underneath a disguise of a smile
Gradually I'm dying inside
Friends ask me how I feel
And I lie convincingly
Cause I don't want to reveal
The fact that I'm suffering
So I wear my disguise
Till I go home at night
And turn down all the lights
And then I break down and cry"
And many of you know this is my favorite song by En Vogue ( dang I miss their voices)
The emotion they sung this song with just made the words that much more intense for me. I was really young when this song was out and in no way should have connected with this song the way I did... but how could you NOT?!?!
Whenever I hear this song I get emotional -- Luther was great with making any song come alive! Many of us rush into things and then wonder why it doesn't work. Or have been hurt so badly we tend to think love is simply not possible...
"nothing hurts as bad as when
you see you gave up to easily'"
"sometimes love
takes a long time
but wait for love and
you're gonna get the chance
to love"
#shoutout to my music twin -- I think she may be the only one who understands my love for that song
When I first heard this song I was literally blown away!! It didn't hurt that the musical arrangement was perfect
"Is it over, how do we go about deciding
Do we add up all the good times then divide them
By how many times we hurt each other
Or do we just ignore there numbers
And vow right now that nothing's gonna take us under"
"See if you leave
I will not die physically
But emotionally "You might as well bury me"
Said if I can't be the man I should've been
before all of this happened.
But if we hold on "And ask god for direction..."
when we get lost we can make the correction if we
just stand strong all our ups and downs have finally come around
And there will be nothing that can shake us nothing that can break us and we will stay together!!!"
Now this lady here my dear sweet sister Reecie put me up on her and this song immediately stood out
"I know what I said
Was heat of the moment
But theres a little truth in between the words we've spoken
Its a little late now to fix the heart thats broken
Please don't ask me where I'm going
Cause I don't know
No I don't know anymore"
"Nobody wants to know the truth
Until their hearts broken
Don't you dare tell them
What you think to do
Till they get over
You can only learn these things
From experience
When you get older
I just wish that someone would have told me"
This mans voice is just perfect...
And this--Jaheim made me really proud...
Ok I am going to stop now -- I could go on and on with this right here!!! Another #shoutout to Best Damn Music Blog!! if you haven't stopped by do so now...
So tell me what are some of YOUR favorite lyrically powerful songs?

yessss! I was reading like wait I thought you didn't like CBR...but I'm glad to have put you on! and that Luther song--yes yes yes! that song is church.
great choices. and I appreciate the shoutout, sister!
ooh, those are some good ones sis! one of my all time faves--lyric wise--is sade's "war of the hearts." you should check that out! and "love is stronger than pride." she said "i wont pretend... that i intend to stop living...i won't pretend...that i'm good at forgiving...but i can't hate you...though i have tried...." girl, girl, GIRL! i love a song that speaks truth like that--especially when i can identify with said truth. another all time fave is anita baker's "fairy tales." she breaks it DOWN! and "under my skin" by vivian green..., and omg, "send for me" by atlantic starr...i could so go on and on. LOL.
Reecie I am so happy you put me on to her. I think originally the radio killed her for me. You know just too much of her and the one song.
Tisha that damn Sade song!! WHEW LAWD - I mean that one sends me over the edge. Send for me just went off over here.
Thanks for the comments sisters
SIL...preciate the shoutout! I can get with those choices you posted except for CBR. I just can't deal with it...
But I wanna add Tamia's You Put a Move on My Heart...Usher's Here I Stand, and Chris Brown's Crawl. Those 3 songs have some really powerful lyrics to them as well.
D, yup CBR is a unique voice and you either can dig it or you can't. I couldn't for a long time, but those workds opened my eyes WIDE to her and I am happy for that.
Crawl is a very good song lyrically - how did I not post John Legend ~ Another Again?? That song is some serious truth
I LOVE "Breakdown"! It was my fave off that CD. I have soooooooo many lyrical hitters, its tough to know where to start. It also depends on my mood, some songs make *feel* much more when I'm happy/sad/melancholy, etc but one that ALWAYS makes me melt when I hear it:
I love you in a place,
where there's no space or time
I love you for my life,
you're a friend of mine
And when my life is over
remember when we were together
We were alone
and I was singing this song to you
-Donny Hathaway
I know you feel me on that one!
Umm, now please update your blogroll with my blog, thanks!! LOL
Meemz you are on my blog roll... and I know how you feel about that song, because we feel the same way...
Im late but I love CBR!!!
Now, Jill Scott's Insomnia was IT for me! That song embodied one of the darkest moments of my life and now when I hear it I can smile and know Ive come so far!
